Sir Richard Bishop @ NCF Cultural Co-op, Ballina
Sunday September 28th / Doors: 7.30pm / Start: 8pm
Richard Bishop is renowned for his mercurial guitar-playing with Seattle ethno-delic legends Sun City Girls, but he has also released a significant body of solo work.
He releases his new LP Hillbilly Ragas out on September 26th on the Drag City label (Will Oldham, Ty Segall, Ryley Walker).
He combines soulfulness and advanced technique with a panache that’s nearly unrivalled among today’s guitarists.
His compositions often reflect the shadow worlds of India, the Middle East, North Africa, and other points along the Gypsy trail.
Bishop strums spiritual with incantatory ragas, free-folk excursions, crystalline flamenco flourishes, ruddy Appalachian folk, Middle Eastern-tinged fantasias and gypsy arabesques.
“For this 2025 European Tour, I will be playing solo acoustic guitar, and will be focussing on new material and improvisation. This will be my first solo acoustic tour in 10 years”.
He has previously collaborated with Ben Chasny (Six Organs of Admittance) and drummer extraordinaire Chris Corsano in the group Rangda.
Richard was also a co-founder of the legendary Sublime Frequencies record label. The label, whose mission is dedicated to acquiring and releasing obscure sights and sounds from Africa, India, S.E. Asia and beyond, began in 2003 and currently has over 65 releases.
“Bishops back catalogue spans dozens of albums, a whole parallel dimension of global influences and subjects from UFO’s to the beat poets. The delight is not knowing where he’s going to go, but knowing it’ll be a dazzling ride”. The Wire
