SHORT BIO: MAC GIOLLA GHUNNA (Gilgunn) is a composer, multimedia artist, and producer working across the spectrum of the avant-garde and the popular.

The aesthetic evident across his diverse body of work is characterised by an avant-gardism that expands subjectivity with collective import — whereby ’The Mind Altering Alters All’. This activity encompasses a variety of forms, genres, instruments, and techniques with projects that involve cross-disciplinary activities with literature, video, video games, and visual arts. His work also includes collaborations and performances with key artists including Hans Joachim-Roedelius, Tony Conrad, Rhys Chatham, and Jennifer Walshe.

A new ten-track album of otherworldly compositions titled MAC GIOLLA GHUNNA will be released as a limited-edition CD, download, and on streaming services from 1 May 2026.

About the album:

MAC GIOLLA GHUNNA conjures otherworldly compositions to evoke musical dimensions that decolonise and elevate. From shapeshifting beat-driven forms with avant-garde tunings, to ambience and minimalism layered with no wave abrasion and noise, and otherworldly voices and sounds drawn from the well of Irish folk traditions and culture. This eponymous album is a radical return from beyond that heralds the emergence of a distinctive voice across ten diverse works. It explores the ecstatic and liminal – assembled across several years between Dublin and the Ox Mountains in the West of Ireland.

The otherworld is a way of being, hearing, and seeing in this world, as philosopher John Moriarty observes. In an era of genocide and neocolonial expansion, hypercapitalist iniquity, and dystopian techno-fascism – it is vital to reconnect with and be grounded in an affirmative, brightened, and expansive experience of LIFE. This multifaceted vision is reflected in the music presented here: éist le spéis agus coinnigh súil ar an spás seo...
